Day Three - Hammelburg - Task Force Baum
Today we travel to nearby Aschaffensburg for the start of a very special commemoration,
as we join with local German reservists, historians and others and retrace the
route taken by Task Force Baum, (named for its commander Major Abe Baum) in
the legendary Hammelburg Raid to liberate the POWs held in OFLAG XIIIB. The
raid, ordered by General George Patton because of fears that the POWs (including
his son-in-law) would be murdered by the retreating German Army, was conducted
by elements of the 4th Armored Division’s 37th Tank Bn and 10th Armored
Infantry. We will travel the route of advance to the camp, and upon reaching
the site, will conduct a memorial service, before retracing our route as we
follow the retreat of Task Force Baum as they attempted to return to American
Lines. Unfortunately, they were surrounded by overwhelming German
forces near Reussenberg, with most of the force being captured, including the
commander. We join this evening in a commemorative dinner with local guests
and friends.
