Tour Itinerary:
7 Sept - (Day One) Arrive Los Angeles. Group meeting in preparation for departure the next day.
8 Sept - (Day Two) Depart Los Angeles (just after midnight) on a flight to Incheon, Korea. Cross International Dateline, lose a day.
9 Sept - (Day Three) Arrive in Inchon and transfer to a flight to Vietnam. Arrive Hanoi late in the evening and transfer to the ICC Hotel. Hotel: ICC (B, L (on plane), D)
10 Sept - (Day Four) A full day tour of sights of military interest in Hanoi, to include the National Army Museum, Hoa Lo Prison ("The Hanoi Hilton"), the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and Presidential Palace, and other sites as time permits. In the evening, subject to availability and approval, an "Open-House" with the Marine Detachment of the U.S. Embassy. Hotel: ICC (B, L, D)
11 Sept - (Day Five) We depart early in the morning for the flight to Da Nang and proceed to check-in at our hotel. Lunch will be provided at the Kim Do Restaurant, one of Da Nang's oldest and best-known restaurants. In the afternoon, a city tour to include Marble Mountain, the old NSA area, and the New China Beach. Remainder of the day for rest and relaxation and visitation of the former HQ sites in town. 12 Sept - (Day Six) Early morning departure for a full day's exploration of the western edge of the "Rocket Belt." We will visit sites along Route One. Sites we will visit include the Tu Bon/Vu Gia River Basin and Hills 55, 65, 37, and 52. We will also cover An Hoa Combat Base, Liberty Bridge, the Arizona Territory, Goi Island, Antenna Valley, and the Que Sons. Dinner at one of Hoi An's many fine restaurants. 13 Sept - (Day Seven) Another full day in the field visiting as many engineer sites and projects as requested. We proceed to the Chu Lai area, with stops at Hill 69, Hill 43, and Tam Hiep. We will view the area of the landing and the Catfish Out Posts. From atop Hill 43, there will be a brief commentary on the conduct of the landing. We then continue south to the Starlite operational area and visit sites in the area to include My Lai. Hotel: Hoi An/Victoria (B, L, D)
14 Sept - (Day Eight) Today we continue south to the area of the largest amphibious operation of the Vietnam War - Operation Double Eagle. We will visit Duc Pho, Nui Dau, Nui Dang, and some of the remaining engineer projects along Route One. We return to Da Nang by way of Hoi An. Hotel: Hoang Anh Plaza (B, L).
15 Sept - (Day Nine) We depart Da Nang early in the morning for Hue, with stops at some interesting engineer sites enroute. We also visit Red Beach, Nam O, Hai Van Pass, and Lang Co and Phu Bai. Upon arrival in Hue, we check into the Huong Giang Hotel. (This hotel was the former ARVN BOQ during the battle of Hue.) We immediately commence a city walking tour south of the Perfume River. We follow in trace the operational maneuvers of 2/5 and 1/1 to retake the city during the Tet Offensive of 1968. Sites covered will be the Phu Cam Canal, the old Texaco Station, MACV Compound, Hue University, and other sites. The afternoon is free for rest and relaxation (R&R) at the hotel pool. 16 Sept - (Day Ten) A leisurely day of retracing 1/5's actions to retake the Dong Ba Market area and the Citadel. This will include a walking tour of the battle of the Phase Lines, followed by visits to the Airstrip and the Forbidden City within the walls of the Citadel. After lunch in the city, there will be ample time to explore any additional requested sites You can shop on Le Loi Street, or R&R at the hotel pool. Dinner on your own at any of Hue City's fine restaurants. Hotel: Huong Giang (B, L)
17 Sept - (Day Eleven) Early morning departure for Quang Tri Province. Along the way, we will pass the Ai Tu Airstrip (Quang Tri City) and sites important to the 1972 Easter Offensive. We check into the Truong Son Hotel and proceed west on Route 9 to Camp Carroll, The Rock Pile, Razor Back, Khe Gia Bridge, Khe Sanh, and, if time permits, Lang Vei and the Lao Border. We return late in the evening. Dinner at the Tan Chau Restaurant, and, if it can be arranged, we will be joined by former local members of the Viet Cong Regiment that operated south of the Cua Viet River. 18 Sept - (Day Twelve) Another full day in the field. We head west on Route 9 to Leatherneck Square and tour Cam Lo, The Washout, Con Tien, Gio Linh and the Peace Bridge on the Ben Hai River. We return to Hue with stops at the Dong Ha Bridge. If desired, the Dai Do battle site can be visited during the late afternoon. Hotel: Huong Giang (B, L)
19 Sept - (Day Thirteen) This morning we catch the early morning flight to Hanoi and check in to the ICC Hotel. After lunch, and if permission can be obtained, we will go to the Joint Task Force Full Accounting Headquarters for a briefing on current body-recovery activities in Vietnam. There will also be ample time for last minute shopping or sightseeing in Hanoi. Dinner on this day will be on your own followed by and evening departure for Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi Hotel: ICC (B, L,)
20 Sept - (Day Fourteen) We depart Hanoi in the early morning for a flight to Inchon where, after a short layover, we board a connecting flight back to Los Angeles, arriving the same date, 20 September at about 0900 AM. (L, D, on plane)
